Coco Tap

The easiest way to drink from a green nut

As seen on the ABC’s New Inventors -3/4/06
Winner of Episode 12

Coco tap, open a coconut with ease for a refreshing drink of green coconut water, one of  the most thirst quenching drinks in the world. No need for a machete or dehusking the nut. Simply insert the coco tap through to the water and remove, then place a straw through the hole, into the water and drink.

The Cocotap is a ‘marine grade’ stainless steel tube with a sharp spike at one end, the tube opens into a T shape, making it easy to hold and screw into a coconut. Inspiration

The current Cocotap design was produced 18 months ago after 10 years of development. How does it work? Made from marine grade stainless steel and hand milled, the Cocotap is easily resharpened and cleaned and can be hygienically used in premises serving the public.
The T-bar is hinged so that the Cocotap folds to a straight tube for easy storage. The “Traveller” model has a 3/8" shaft and 1/2" handle overall length 165mm this compact model is easy to carry, use and clean.

A removable plastic safety cap over the spike allows the tool to be safely carried. A metal skewer attached to the plastic cap provides a useful tool for clearing the tube of husk. The skewer can be placed inside the tube and the safety cap placed over the spike when the Cocotap is transported. If the coconut inner shell is too well developed to twist and push straight through, stop forcing and hold the Cocotap handle upright with your thumb. Then lightly strike the end, using a rock or hammering device. Alternatively invert the coconut and tap or bump the end of the handle on the ground or a tree trunk etc.

The Cocotap is not designed to penetrate mature coconuts, except through the eyes once de-husked. Remove the Cocotap by the opened handle, twisting it out then insert a drinking straw or two. If a straw is not readily available simply tap two holes and drink or pour directly from the lower one.

Clean the core of husk fibre from the Cocotap through the inspection port with the tool supplied

Using the Coco Tap

Clutch the handle so that the solid side rests in the base of your palm. Use your knuckles, or thumb and forefinger to stabilize the shaft while twisting the spike into the middle of the coconut. Aim perpendicular to the inner shell so that the force applied pierces, rather than skips off, the inner shell.
