Savusavu, Fiji

Jack and his wife Sana are farmers in Fiji. He told us his story: "Last year, I made 5 tons of copra which earned us less than US$750. This year the copra price rose, so we might have earned about $1,250 from copra. However, I actually earned over $3,350 from my sales of DME oil. I was also able to sell the residual presscake as stock feed. My extended family worked with me and shared in this increased income."

In August 2004 Kokonut Pacific conducted a DME installation and training course at the Northern Christian Training Centre on the same island. This DME unit is giving a livelihood to the unemployed and incomes to students and was supported by TEAR Australia. Jack came along and was a great help in teaching others from his extensive experience. He is keen to upgrade his equipment to the standards required for organic certification.
